Island Thrift and community come together to fund new dock for the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing program

With three youth sessions and one adult class session complete, Oak Harbor Youth Sailing (OHYS) volunteers all agreed the much needed new dock made this summer’s sailing lessons much easier. Materials for the new dock were funded through a grant from Island Thrift and by community individuals who purchased planks which were later inscribed as donors wished. The dock was designed by Craig Cooley and built with volunteer help from Cooley, Byron Skubi, Ken Hulett, and Jeff Campbell. All four are volunteers for the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing program.

The new dock provides better access to the water for all classes. In prior years, it took instructors, volunteers, and students more than twenty minutes to transfer the eight foot El Toros from the old A dock to the other side of the head walk and twenty minutes at the end of the class to transfer them back. Less time transferring boats translates to moretime sailing for students. A secondary issue was the weight and the space taken by the El Toros, the fourteen foot Lidos, and the row boats. In the past, the storage of the boats on the old dock was like a puzzle that had to be disassembled and reassembled for each class.

The Oak Harbor Youth Sailing Foundation is a 501 3(c) organization. It was founded by the late Scott Cline and Dave French in 2004. For the past five years donations and OHYS events help to provide funds to maintain the boats and docks. However, the cornerstone of the organization is the volunteer help from instructors and dock helpers making youth and adult sailing lessons available to Oak Harbor and surrounding community residents at a very modest cost. Each summer over thirty volunteers help young sailors learn sailing techniques. The program encompasses the basics of rigging the boat, steering, sailing rules, sail trim, racing rules, and boating safety.
