Walker, Holcomb win weekly races

Bill Walker and Chad Holcomb each won races in the Oak Harbor Yacht Club’s Thursday night Magic Juan racing series July 6.

For the first time this season, Windseekers, a new category of sailors who don’t use spinnakers, took part in the races, sailing the same course.

Walker, racing Ehu Kai, won the first contest and was runner-up in the second Thursday to remain in first place in the overall standings after six races with 11 points.

Shannon Buys (Vertigo, 16 points) is second in the overall standings, followed by Holcomb (Yeah Dogg, 22) and Dave Steckman (Renaissance, 25).

In the first race Thursday, Buys placed second to Walker and Steckman was third. Rick Almberg (Slingshot), Jim McAlpine (Lucky Jim), Holcomb and Rex Dupuis (Gadzooks) completed the field.

Holcomb bounced back to win race two, trailed by Walker, Almberg, McAlpine, Dupuis, Buys and Steckman.

In the Windseekers’ race, Jason Polly, aboard a yet-to-be-named boat, finished ahead of Allen Wilson on Toto.

“It was fabulous getting Allen and Jason out here with us,” said Steckman, longtime OHYC sail fleet ambassador. “They race the same course as the rest of us without all the hollering and jockeying at the start. It’s way more fun to figure out racing with no pressure.”

The sail fleet series continues until mid-October, and all are welcome. For more information, including crewing opportunities, visit http://www.ohyc.org/sail-fleet or contact Sail Fleet Captain Bill Weinsheimer at ohsailfleet@gmail.com
