Team Renaissance took a break from weekly Thursday night racing to participate in Anacortes Yacht Club’s popular North Century race around the San Juan Islands on August 18-20.

The double handed crew of Steckman/Joiner raced hard over the 31 hours of varying conditions to take to win in the 100nm race.

"This challenges even the most experienced racers", Steckman said.

"We started the race with a good spinnaker ride up to Point Roberts and was hit with mechanical break downs before rounding the first mark", he added.

A quick repair of the boom and recovery Renaissance pulled ahead of their class and held the physical lead to the halfway point. As the winds shout down near Turn Point, and the currents ripped, competitors fought to control their headings and the leads changed hands several times.

Renaissance corrected nearly an hour over the second place boat and the rest of the fleet.  One racer noted that just being able to finish this race is an accomplishment in itself.
